Water damage can be devastating to a home’s interior – impacting all rooms, especially bathroom tiles. Water damaged tile repair, when done early, can save homeowners money. Grout is designed to be a water barrier between tiles and stone, but over years of use and cleaning with chemicals, grout will eventually dry out, deteriorate, and become cracked, broken or missing. If water damages the floor or the bathroom wall behind the tiles, tiles will eventually become loose and the affected area will need to be repaired.
If caught early enough the water damaged area should be re-grouted to ensure that water will not continue to penetrate the wall behind the tiles. However, if gone unnoticed for a prolonged period of time, water will penetrate into the substructure causing the adhesive on the back of the tiles to loosen and eventually cause them to fall off of the surface. In extreme cases, the walls will absorb so much water that new wallboard will also be needed. It is important to recognize water damage and act quickly in order to minimize the damage that water is allowed to cause. Some signs of water damage include a musty smell, buckling or staining on the floors, crumbling plaster or blistering paint on the walls, and visible mold.
